Many patients express concern about how the skin around their eyes looks. The eyes are often one of the first things people notice. Their appearance can influence how people perceive us. As we age, our skin begins to lose its elasticity. This leads to facial features beginning to change. Dark circles often appear around the eyes. It is common to develop fine lines and wrinkles on the face. There are a variety of surgical and non-surgical treatment options that can give you a more youthful, energetic appearance!
What is Blepharoplasty?
The excess skin and fat in the upper eyelids can cause the eyelids to look droopy as we age. This makes you look tired even when you get enough sleep. An upper blepharoplasty, also known as upper eyelid surgery, can give you a more rested, youthful, and energetic appearance.
Upper eyelid (blepharoplasty) surgery is an outpatient surgical procedure. It involves removing excess skin and fat in the upper eyelids.
It is performed through a hidden lid crease incision that allows the surgeon to reshape the contours of the upper eyelid. Removal of extra skin brings out the natural beauty of the human eye. This allows you to use makeup more effectively. Sometimes sagging eyelids can interfere with vision in older adults. In this case, blepharoplasty can improve vision. If this is the case, your insurance may cover the procedure.
Lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is also an outpatient surgical procedure. During the procedure, the surgeon removes excess fat or skin through a hidden incision inside the lower lid. He then rejoins the skin with tiny dissolving stitches.
The goal of lower eyelid surgery is to get rid of the depression between the eyelid fat and the cheek fat. By repositioning soft tissue or fat bulges in the lower eyelid beneath the depression, you can look more youthful and rested.
What Causes Wrinkles?
Most people don’t realize that there are two vastly different causes of wrinkles:
Dynamic wrinkles form over time when muscles contract, usually with smiling or frowning. The most common ones are wrinkles between the eyelids or “crow’s feet” wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes. Dynamic wrinkles are best treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Static wrinkles are lines or depressions that occur despite no muscle action. They are generally caused by the effects of aging and sun exposure
The best treatments for static wrinkles are substances that plump up and fill out the problem lines. These substances are “dermal fillers” or “gel fillers”.
BOTOX Cosmetic can have a dramatic effect on dynamic wrinkles associated with your facial expression. BOTOX ® is used for frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal lines on the forehead, and “crow’s feet” around the eyes. Patients usually see a remarkable improvement in these wrinkle lines shortly after treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic.
What Is Botox?
BOTOX® is a purified protein isolated from a microorganism, in a similar process to many antibiotics. It has been safely used to treat migraine headaches for many years.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a popular injectable drug. It was FDA approved almost twenty years ago. Millions of patients have safely used BOTOX to reduce or get rid of their facial fine lines and wrinkles.
Is Botox Really Safe?
Yes. The idea of Botox frightens some people because the treatment uses botulinum toxin. The thing to remember is that only large doses are life-threatening. For cosmetic purposes such as treating wrinkles, Botox is used in very small doses. This makes it very safe when administered by a qualified physician. Very few adverse events related to Botox® have been reported to the FDA.
How Does it Work?
Dynamic facial wrinkles develop over time from constant contraction of facial muscles. BOTOX® relaxes those muscles by blocking the nerve impulses that cause them to contract. Unlike fillers, BOTOX® does not fill in facial lines.
How Long Does a Botox Treatment Last?
The first time that patients have injections, they last about 3-4 months. If a patient gets the injections on a regular basis, they will need them less over time.
With the passage of time, our facial skin tends to lose volume and elasticity. The skin may sag slightly, and some areas of the face may appear slightly hollow. At the same time, there may be areas of puffiness. The skin doesn’t look as tight, and static lines and wrinkles appear. Static lines and wrinkles are best treated with substances called fillers.
What is a Filler?
Dermal fillers are synthetic materials injected into the face to increase lip, cheek, or chin volume. Products such as JUVÉDERM® XC work by “plumping up” the skin and filling in wrinkles. In some cases, filler can treat dark circles beneath the eyes.
What is JUVÉDERM?
JUVÉDERM® XC is a dermal gel filler manufactured from a highly biocompatible and biodegradable type of hyaluronic acid. This is a natural substance in the skin. Hyaluronic acid’s main function is to hold onto moisture that increases fullness. As we age, we lose hyaluronic acid from the skin, resulting in the appearance of deflation.
Injecting Juvéderm can increase the fullness and inflate the skin, with a very low risk of an allergic reaction. Sometimes it can stimulate the body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid.
JUVÉDERM® XC may be used to rejuvenate several problem areas including “smile lines” and vertical lip lines that convey the unwanted look of frowning, sadness, or aging. Results can last up to a year.
The XC in the Juvéderm product names indicates that it contains some lidocaine. This helps to reduce any discomfort that occurs during injections.
What is JUVÉDERM Voluma® XC?
Juvéderm Voluma® XC is another FDA approved gel filler. Voluma XC is also made from a modified hyaluronic acid. It is specially formulated for restoring cheek or midface volume loss. Juvéderm Voluma® XC can also help restore a more youthful curve and position to the higher area of the cheekbones in women.
What is JUVÉDERM Volbella® XC?
This Juvéderm product became FDA approved in 2016. It adds subtle volume to the lips and helps smooth out wrinkle lines around the mouth. The effects can last up to a year. More recently, specialists have achieved successful results using Volbella to treat circles or bags under the eyes.
